The present work is the culmination of Richard Burton's five-years stay in Sindh, where he had the opportunity to learn the manner and customs, the domestic details, and the religious opinions and language of the people among, and with whom, he lived. He found the previous descriptions of Sindh and its inhabitants of little use; they were either too popular in nature, or written with a view of imparting a superficial knowledge of the language. Richard Burton has narrated in this work long descriptions of the studies, religion and ceremonies peculiar to the race inhabiting Sindh, the first specimens of language, and notices of the literature ever printed, and also the first detailed account of native habits and customs, manner and ceremonies. This work would be useful to not only linguists, ethnographers, and historians but also general readers who are fond of travelling in the past.
