QUANTITATIVE METHODS IN GEOGRAPHY: An Introduction to Spatial Analysis

This book is intended for use in quantitative methods courses for geography students. As statistical and mathematical procedures become increasingly common in geographical study and research, a knowledge of quantitative techniques and their use in geography is important. The text teaches not only quantitative techniques but also when and why they can be used in geography. Quantitative Methods in Geography: An Introduction to Spatial Analysis is first and foremost a geography book. It focuses on geography problems to which statistical and mathematical procedures can be applied. Most of these problems involve the analysis of maps, a traditional activity of geographers. In recent years, statistical and mathematical procedures have been newly applied in map analysis and contemporary map analysis has been rechristened ‘spatial analysis’. This book begins with a discussion of the nature of mathematics and ends, appropriately, on an applied note.
