North and South

"North and South," a social novel by Elizabeth Gaskell published in 1854–55, stands among her most renowned works, along with "Wives and Daughters" (1865) and "Cranford" (1853). Originally titled after the heroine, Margaret Hale, Gaskell acceded to Charles Dickens' preference for "North and South." Set in the fictional industrial town of Milton, the novel explores the clash between mill owners and workers during the Industrial Revolution, depicting the complexities of labor relations and Margaret Hale's evolving understanding.
