Flora Annie Steel (1847–1929) was a British writer who spent 22 years in British India, where she became known for her works set in or related to the Indian subcontinent. Her novel On the Face of the Waters (1896) explores the Indian Mutiny. Steel was deeply engaged with Indian society, particularly local women, and learned their language. She collected folk-tales, which she published in 1894. Her book The Complete Indian Housekeeper and Cook (1897) provided guidance to European women in India. Steel’s best works include From the Five Rivers and Tales of the Punjab, reflecting her deep connection with India.
