Hindu Law in its Sources

Hindu law is based on a variety of sources that guide its principles and practices. The primary sources include Shruti (divine revelation), primarily the Vedas, and Smriti (human records), such as the Manusmriti. Commentaries by scholars like Jimutavahana and Vijnaneshwara also play a key role. Customary law and judicial precedents, including rulings by courts, further shape Hindu legal practices. In modern times, statutory laws, such as the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, and Hindu Succession Act, 1956, have codified and reformed various aspects of Hindu personal law, adapting traditional principles to contemporary needs.
