The book chronicles Sir Richard Meade's extensive service spanning forty-three years as a soldier, political officer, and administrator. During his dedicated engagement in his assigned tasks, in 1873, Meade was appointed by Lord Northbrook as the President of a Commission responsible for investigating severe allegations of mismanagement against Malhar Rao, the Gaekwar of Baroda. This ruler held the highest position among the Maratha ruling chiefs, both in rank and influence. Meade also played a role in the trial of the Chief in 1875, which revolved around accusations of an attempted poisoning of Colonel Phayre, the British Resident. Throughout this critical period, Meade served as a competent representative of the British Government for a span of five years.
