Colonial Lucknow: Burra Sahib and Chota Hazry

An extensive amount of documentation (including the author's own published contributions) exists on Nawabi Lucknow that describes, analyzes and offers in-depth insights into the art, culture and life-styles of that remarkable period spanning 130 years (1722 - 1856). In contrast, there is a significant lack of awareness about Colonial Lucknow, which formally lasted for 92 years. This is surprising, given the considerable impact the British had on the development of the city, encompassing landscaping, the establishment of public facilities, the creation of institutions, and the construction of notable architectural landmarks, many of which are extant today. This book is not intended to be a comprehensive treatise or historical account of those tumultuous times; instead, it is a modest endeavour to chronicle certain overlooked challenges, experiences, and successes of Colonial Lucknow from 1856 to 1947, aiming to present this information to readers in an interesting and succinct manner.
