City and Urban Fringe: A Case Study of Bareilly

The accelerating expansion of Indian cities and towns during recent decades is making increasingly serious inroads into formerly rural territories and confusion is usually a major characteristics of the overmoving boundary between the two. Sound planning based on accurate detailed knowledge of conditions is, therefore an urgent requirement if unnecessary hardships and costly mistakes are to be avoided. The present study is an attempt to analyse the growth and development of Bareilly city for the understanding and interpretation of some of its features with a view to applying the geographer’s method of survey and analysis to planning for its orderly growth in future. After delineating the urban fringe of the city and assessing its impact on surrounding villages as well as analysing the major problems, a comprehensive plan for the future development of the city has been provided. Thus, the book examines the various geographical changes that are taking place around the outer edge of a typical Indian city.
