Cassell's Illustrated History of India

This book contained that the proposed history will cover the vast empire bounded by the snowy Himalayas, the Indus, and the sea, with a population of more than 150 million souls, covering 1,500,000 square miles. Starting from the origin of the East India Company, the book will trace the story of its gradual acquisitions and conquests, including the foundation of our present supremacy in India, with a focus on the political progress of the Company, the moral and material advancement. The book will also refer occasionally to past historical events of India and the wonderful vegetable productions of the land and the marvels of its native architecture. Finally, it will highlight India's vital importance to British interests and the honest enterprise and hardy valour that make a character so essentially British.
