Banjara

This is a study of a nomadic tribe which presents colourful culture with an altogether different level of acculturation. Of late these Banjara have given-up nomadism and have settled and developed, socially, economically and even politically. As such it is not only an ethnographic study of a changing culture but a story of development and of assimilation with exotic culture. The Banjara of Vidarbha are a type by itself and can boast of providing two able Chief Ministers for a progressive state like Maharashtra. This group also shows a strong Hindu culture with signs of assimilating Sikh and Muhammedan worship within its fold. Though Rajput characteristics are very strong and historically inherited, they have thoroughly mixed with the local Maharashtrian style of life, even establishing marital ties, though in exceptional cases. This study which also documents and presents the rich Banjara folk-lore is expected to attract all: scholars, students of Social Science, and casual readers as well.
