A Nika-English Dictionary

“A Nika‑English Dictionary,” compiled by Rev. Dr. Johann Ludwig Krapf and Rev. Johannes Rebmann, and published in London by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge in 1887, is a pioneering lexicon of the Nika (part of the Mijikenda/Giryama) Bantu dialect spoken on Kenya’s coast  Spanning some 400 pages, it presents Nika entries with English glosses and usage notes, reflecting extensive field work by the two German missionaries in Mombasa and Rabai. Serving as one of the earliest written records of this coastal language, it supported missionary work and laid groundwork for future linguistic research in East African Bantu dialects.
