A History of Ladakh

A History of Ladakh by A.H. Francke is a foundational historical and ethnographic account of the Ladakh region in northern India. Written by a Moravian missionary in the early 20th century, the book combines historical narrative with local legends, religious traditions, and cultural practices. Francke traces the region's political evolution, from early Tibetan influence to the Dogra conquest, and documents interactions with neighboring regions like Kashmir and Central Asia. The work is valuable for its use of indigenous sources, including chronicles and oral histories, and offers a rare colonial-era perspective on Ladakh’s unique blend of Tibetan Buddhism and local customs.
