This work is an introductory sketch of the country of Nepal. It is an endeavored to be an exhaustive account of the country. A part of this book is the text of the translation of the Nepali chronicle called Parbatiya, and was translated by Mir Munshi Shew (Shiv) Shunkar Singh and Pandit Gunananda. It is based upon personal observation and inquiry of the author, during a residence of ten years in the country, and he has inserted nothing in it but what, to the best of his belief, is correct as far as it goes. It does not, of course, pretend to be a full account of the country; for such a work is hardly possible while our relations with Nepal remain as they are at present, and would, moreover, be out of place in a book of this sort. The book is in two partsthe first is about the area where the British were allowed access to, and the second is on the history of the entire country from mythological times till the 1870?s. There are a total of 17 chapters, which notice, among other descriptionthe geography, ethnology, castes and tribes, historical events, the politics, the Gupta dynasty of Ne Muni, Sunyasri Misra, Shankracarya visit to Nepal, founding of Kathmandu, Rajput dynasties, Ran Malla ? king of Banepa, taking of Kathmandu by the Gorkhas, history and rise of the Gurkhas, the Gurkha dynasties, etc. There are nine appendices, and 16 plates to delineate the subject properly. It was a reprint of the 1877 edition.
