This little pamphlet is one of a series of guide books which the Archaeological Survey of India is gradually providing for the use of visitors to place of interest. The Buddhist site of Sarnath, four miles north of Banaras, possesses a special interest as it was here that after attaining divine wisdom at Gaya, Gautam Buddha preached his first sermon. The plan that accompanies this handbook has been brought up to date by filling in all the exploration work carried out since the publication of the previous edition up to the year 1922. The division of the excavated portion of the site into the Stupa and Monastery areas is no longer sustainable. This handbook is based on the accounts of the excavations published in the annual reports of Archaeological Survey of India. In ancient Buddhists texts these remains are called by the name of Rishipatna or Mrigadava. This book is exceptionally good in the context of Buddhist literature.
