In The recent times, advanced information technology, globalisation, capitalist production and consumerism, and proliferation of the market economy have accelerated the process of social transformation and caused rapid changes in different aspects of Indian society. The areas affected most are economy, polity and culture. India, a traditional society, with its plural and hierarchical character, faces the threat of modernisation, industrialisation, urbanisation and the other similar processes. These processes not only alter the way of life of people in the metropolitan centres but also bring about transformation in the rural economy and social structure. The rapid changes taking place in the Indian society thus attract the sociologists a great deal.
It is in continuation of the analysis and discussions on the theme of social change that this volume largely deals with social change in India. Each article focuses on a unique area of social change. Besides, a reasonably comprehensive discussion on the Indian social structure has also been presented.
