Development of University Libraries in India after Independence

Since the objectives and functions of a university library are dependent upon those of the university it serves, the present CICIL publication attempts to examine in detail the aims and objectives of higher education in the context of the changing modern world, traces the historical development of both universities and university libraries in India, and also indicates briefly the recommendations of the Committees and Commissions pertaining to library development. The main focus of the book, nonetheless, is on the role of the University Grants Commission in building up and modernising the university libraries inter alia detailing the quality improvement programmes, particularly of the library personnel, initiated in the light of the recommendations made by various Committees constituted by the University Grants Commission.
