In the year 1851 the author?s lamented father, the late N R Ranina conceived a plan of writing and publishing a Comprehensive English Gujarati Dictionary, and with the able assistance of his lifelong friend, the late A F. Moos, he issued the first part of the work, of one hundred largesized pages, in the year 1857. This comprised the letters A and B. By the year 1862, three further similar parts of the work were published extending to the letter H. But by that time the authors had found the work so laborious and engrossing that they could not hold out any hope of completing it within that or even the following decade. On the other hand, both the Educational Department and the Public sorely felt the want of an EnglishGujarati Vocabulary, and pressed the authors to bring out a Compendium Volume, to serve as a book of reference till such time as the enlarged work was completed. This they hurriedly got up with the assistance of their friend, the late Kavi Narmada Shanker Lalshanker, the accomplished Gujarati and Sanskrit scholar. The work found favour with E I Howard, the then Director of Public Instruction, and with the Gujaratireading public generally. The book discusses pronunciation, derivatives, synonyms and idioms and appendices containing a list of English prefixes, and suffixes with their significations and words and phrases from Latin, Greek etc with their meanings.
