The author arrived at Lucknow with her husband in March, 1857 only a few weeks before the Sepoy Mutiny outbreak. The annexed extracts from a subsequent letter point out the precise circumstances under which this record, of events so painfully interesting, was kept. As no lady’s diary has hitherto been given to the public, the friends of the writer have thought that it might interest others, beyond the family circle, to communicate additional information on a subject in which the British nation feels so deep an interest. The subject of this little book is the siege of the Residency in Lucknow. It is a very personal account, and vividly recreated the days from May 15th to Dec. 28th, 1857. The book is in the form of daily entries (as the title suggests), that give short narrations of the trials that the besieged were experiencing. This book is a reprint of the 1858 edition.
